YORK CONCERT BAND

SUE SYKES, Conductor
Charity performance to benefit AVOPRORIT (voluntary
association for tumour research) and celebrate the 10th anniversary
of the
Associazione Culturale Accademia degli Incogniti
I CONCERTI DELL'ACCADEMIA
2004
The
Accademia degli Incogniti is ten years old. That’s not very many
but to understand their significance it’s best to count them individually:
one, two, three, four, ... a concert, another concert, an exhibition,
a Festival, and so on right up to the anniversary. We have managed to
bring to our hills, churches and castles great artists with their wealth
of emotions who, we would like to believe, left a trace, a sign, a seed.
The most difficult task is to summarize all those to whom we owe our
thanks, those who travelled this path, or a part of it, with us: from
the spectator who turned up out of curiosity to those who appeared on
stage, those who applauded and those who helped move the chairs in a
hurry out of a thunderstorm.
Thanks to good fortune and friendship which has made these ten lovely
years possible.
To celebrate this important achievement we’ve devised an evening of
music that will also be an occasion to promote a voluntary association
which has been active in our area for many years, undertaking invaluable
work in the prevention and cure of tumours. We feel therefore it is
right and proper to support the Langhirano Section of AVOPRORIT
by donating the evenings takings.
For once the musical group who will perform at Torrechiara Castle will
not be professional but made up, as we are at the Accademia,
of people who dedicate part of their free time to their art purely for
enjoyment, as an opportunity for self-improvement. We are particularly
grateful to Sarah and all our friends in the York Concert Band
who are offering us their services with enthusiasm and without asking
for any kind of fee to make their own contribution to a charitable association
and to celebrate this anniversary with us. Our heartfelt thanks.
The
wind band, the York Concert Band, was formed in 1991 by solo
trumpeter Mick Reeder. The conductor, Sue Sykes, having received
a degree in music from Hull University, became head of the music department
at a secondary school. She now works with various groups, also as accompanist.
We have now grown to about 40 people from various professions who play
for pleasure and several retired professional musicians, the majority
of whom are coming to Italy. The range of instruments runs from piccolos
and flutes down to the euphonium and tuba and includes percussion and,
something which might arouse your curiosity, an electric sander.
The repertory consists of fairly short pieces suitable for every occasion:
Broadway, films, big band, military and traditional. Our concerts take
place in the region around York, in the north of England, and many serve
to raise funds for various charitable organisations. We made a cd in
2001 to celebrate our first ten years and the second has just been produced
to celebrate our first international engagement: the Italian tour. The
group’s objective is to entertain the public and provide an outlet for
the talents of its members. We hope to leave a smile on the face of
everyone.
