AMANDA SANDRELLI - MARÍA ESTELA MONTI

MALÌA DI BUENOS AIRES

Texts by J.L. Borges
Music by A. Piazzolla, M.D. Pujol, A. Villoldo, A. Troilo

FESTIVAL DI TORRECHIARA 2007

Music meets the theatre and literature, making for a splendid evening. The actress Amanda Sandrelli and the Argentine singer María Estela Monti, supported by an exceptional trio (Giampaolo Bandini, guitar, Cesare Chiacchiaretta, bandoneòn and Enrico Fagone, double bass), evoke the atmosphere and fascination of Buenos Aires through texts by the fantastic author Jorge Luis Borges and great “classics” of Argentine music of the 20th century like Adiós Nonino, Nubes de Buenos Aires, Oblivion, Flor de lino, Chiquilìn de bachin... Underscoring and alternating with some of the great Argentine author and poet’s most evocative writing will be melodies by A. Piazzolla, M.D. Pujol, A. Villoldo and A. Troilo, interpreted by the splendid voice of María Estela Monti, nominated in 2004 and 2006 for the “Best Tango Album” and without doubt one of Latin America’s most award-winning singers. Perfectly matched music and words, magic and memories uniting in a single instant in the enigmatic sound of Borges’ words and the notes on pages of some of the most emotional music of the century just passed.

Amanda Sandrelli

One would think that for the “children of art” it’s almost inevitable that they follow in their famous parents’ footsteps, giving rise to comparisons which can sometimes be merciless, but for Amanda Sandrelli, daughter of two “icons” – film star Stefania Sandrelli and singer/songwriter Gino Paoli, the choice of setting out on a career as an actress began almost by accident when, one evening, her mother invited two friends to dinner, Massimo Troisi and Roberto Benigni. They wanted Amanda for their film Non ci resta che piangere, since when she has come a long way and today acts in films, television and in the theatre and she need not fear uncomfortable comparisons. On the big screen Amanda Sandrelli has appeared in, among others, Amori in corso by Giuseppe Bertolucci, Stefano Quantestorie by Maurizio Nichetti, Nirvana by Gabriele Salvatores and Ricordati di me by Gabriele Muccino. In the theatre she stars in such shows as Buonanotte ai suonatori, Bruciati, Cinque, La Chunga, Gianni Ginetta e gli altri. During the run of Né in cielo, né in terra Amanda met her husband, the actor with South American roots Blas Roca Rey, whom she married in Peru in July 1994 and who is also her partner on stage.
From her father, Gino Paoli, she inherited a passion for music. In 1991 they sang the Italian version of the title song for the Walt Disney Pictures film of Beauty and the Beast.
She is among the leading players for the 1999 television film Madri. In 2007 she is appearing on Canale Cinque in the miniseries Io e mamma, in which she acts for the first time in a leading role alongside her mother Stefania Sandrelli, 23 years after the brief appearance in the film L’attenzione as well as in the second series of the drama Il giudice Mastrangelo with Diego Abatantuono.

María Estela Monti

Tango is alive and thriving as proven by the number and quality of young Argentine artists who are breathing life into an era of really authentic renaissance of this most famous of Latin American musical genres.

One of the diamond tips engraving these “new lines” is doubtless María Estela Monti, from Buenos Aires whose warm voice spans a vast repertory ranging from Tango classics to original compositions. For several years María Estela Monti has been principal vocalist for the group “Suburbio” with which she has released the albums Techos de Coghlan and Ciudad Vital and taken part in important musical events and television programmes. When the group dissolved she spent some time focusing on Argentine songs until the Tango seduced her with its masterly alchemy of music and poetry. María Estela decided to devote herself entirely to this genre and in 1999 she formed the trio “Alma Bohemia” with which she recorded Alma en vivo.
Since 2002 she has been focusing on her solo career and, thanks to an unusual style that emphasises the richness of the melodic line and the poetry of the texts she sings, she already has a large, devoted following who accompany her to her appearances in the most important locations, Festivals like the concert hall in Buenos Aires and all over Argentina.
The recording which really established her is Ciudadana, her first solo work, released in 2003 on the Gobi Music label and produced with the support of Cancillería de la Nación Argentina. The enthusiastic reviews by international music critics as well as the extraordinary success with the public is the best possible way for María Estela Monti to be rewarded for twenty years of passionate work, research and perseverance. In fact it was thanks to Ciudadana that the name of María Estela Monti became known beyond the borders of her own country, when this exceptional period of artistic and professional experience reached its peak with the nomination at the 2004 Latin Grammy Awards for “Mejor Album de Tango”, a nomination which she repeated in 2006 with her new album Ciudad Secreta, on which she worked with some of the most important Argentine musicians.
