FESTIVAL DI TORRECHIARA 2005

Music, whether sung or played, is rooted above all in strong feelings. When a singer possesses the technique and soul to communicate those feelings to listeners, a miracle occurs in which performer and spectator are emotionally on the same level, in the same place.
Renata Tebaldi knew how to achieve this miracle. She had a gift, a unique voice, which she nurtured to perfection because she was aware of what it meant, or rather it was a gift which would have value if she in turn gave of it generously. This she did and, as happens in such cases, she was understood and loved for the generosity with which she shared her wealth of talent.
Generosity came naturally to her, was part of her way of life: there are artists who treat their admirers like a good king treats his subjects, dispensing gestures from a distance; Renata Tebaldi pampered all her keen followers in person, to the point of exhausting her strength so as not to disappoint anyone, yet somehow deriving new energy from it.
Ten years ago we dedicated the Torrechiara Festival to her because we thought – and are still convinced today – that our community should find a permanent expression of gratitude to her. Good music, performed in locations where she began would always remind us of her and bring her to the minds of those who love music, whatever type of music.
As always, unable to respond in any other way, she reciprocated with her friendship, pure and simple.

Now that the Voice of an Angel has returned to heaven we want to continue to remember her by dedicating a special evening to her with a lyric recital which will feature the singers of the Lyric Academy of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, young artists who have however already gained important experience.
The “Palcoscenico” (Stage) project, from which this evening’s performers come, is an annual training programme of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino specifically for the education of instrumentalists, lyric singers and conductors which includes theoretical subjects to prepare them for an artistic career and specialist topics geared to perfecting their practical music skills.
The high quality of the education provided is guaranteed by the participation of principals of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Theatre orchestra, other instrumentalists and guest conductors of the Foundation, Maestro Nir Kabaretti – assistant to Maestro Zubin Mehta as well as by renowned lyric singers. The course includes numerous opportunities for development through observation and productions which range from symphonic to operatic.
Exposure to the realities in one of Italy’s lyric companies facilitates the education of musicians to a high standard and enables them to cope with the realities they encounter at the end of the course because they already possess the requisite skills for the current musical climate.
