The great
music of Ennio Morricone
FESTIVAL
DI TORRECHIARA 2002
Music written for the cinema, of which Ennio Morricone is undisputed
master, describes emotions more than any other; it is music which must
reveal more than the pictures already convey and it must tell or indicate
hidden facets of the story. Jazz, on the other hand, is more alive than
any other type of music and enriched by the proficiency of musicians
to develp new themes based on pre-existing ones; jazz is the creation
of new stories, using earlier ones as its starting point.
So a concert by two great jazz musicians, dedicated to the music of
Ennio Morricone, cannot help but promise a plethora of stories, some
of which are formed by images which have already become part of the
collective imagination. In a way, it’s as if many song-stories were
to be spread among the public and each person were to whisper a new
one in a different ear.

Enrico
Pieranunzi
Enrico pieranunzi, a pianist
with a polished touch and an exceptional composer, is a legendary
figure of Italian jazz, one of the few to have played with musicians
of the calibre of Chet Baker, Jim Hall, Kenny Clarke, Lee Konitz,
Frank Rosolino, Phil Woods, Charlie Haden, Art Farmer, Billy Higgins
and the only European musician to have two compositions included in
the jazz “bible”: the New Real Book II.
As a classically trained
pianist who has always been passionate about jazz, it has been the
fusion of these two spirits which has given his work ever increasing
depth to the point of creating his own personal language, which is
conscious of his European roots and enriched by enormous knowledge
of world-wide contemporary music, giving him a very prominent position
in the jazz world.
He has made guest appearances
at the major jazz festivals in Italy, Europe, Canada and the United
States, where he also recorded the CD “The night gone by” with Marc
Johnson and Paul Motian.
In 1989 he was declared
the Best Italian Musician by the journal Musica Jazz; he was acclaimed
as one of the three foremost European musicians by l’Academie du Jazz
in 1993. Eventually, in 1997, he received the Django d’Or for the
Best European musician.

Rosario
Giuliani
The saxophonist Rosario
Giuliani’s professional career began with recording sound tracks for
internationally renowned musicians: Ennio Morricone, Luis Bacalov,
Nicola Piovani, Mikis Theodorakis, Ritz Ortolani Armando Trovajoli.
In jazz circles he collaborates
with such prestigious artists as Kenny Wheeler, Cedar Walton, Cameron
Brown, Donald Harrison, Joe Locke, Phil Woods, Enrico Rava, Franco
D’Andrea, Giovanni Tommaso, Roberto Gatto, Antonio Faraò. A regular
guest artist at the major Italian and European jazz festivals he has
also taken part in numerous shows for the major Italian networks and
the CD recordings “Homenaje” (the Six Sax group, with two exceptional
guest artists, Bob Mintzer and Randy Brecker), and “L’Incontro” with
the Bassi-Giuliani Quintet”. In 1996 he was awarded the “Massimo Urbani”
prize at Urbisaglia for Best Alto Sax and in 1997 he won the Best
Soloist and Best Group with his quartet at the “Europ Jazz Contest”
in Brussels.
