PAVEL BERMAN

KAUNAS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Conductor and Soloist: PAVEL BERMAN
FESTIVAL DI TORRECHIARA 2001
Pavel Berman has entered international concert podium at the
age of seventeen after winning the Second Prize of the 1987 Paganini
Violin Competition in Genoa, Italy. His international career had a broader
development after he became to be a winner of the First Prize and Gold
Medal as well as special awards for the best performance of the Paganini
caprices and Ysaye’s Sonata at the International Violin Competition
of Indianapolis, USA in 1990.
Since then, Pavel Berman has successfully been touring the world performing
in the major concert halls (Conservatorio Verdi, Milan; Herkulessaal,
Munich; Theatre des Champs-Elysées, Paris; Carnegie Hall, New York,
etc.), appearing in recitals with his father- the legendary Russian
pianist Lazar Berman, and with different orchestras (Dresden Staatskapelle,
Atlanta Symphony, Orchestre de Liege, Prague Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony
Orchestra, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Lublijana Philharmonic,
Zagreb Radio Orchestra, etc.).
While developing his international career, he was a pupil of Professor
Igor Bezrodniy at Moscow’s Conservatory, and in 1992-93 he studied with
Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School in New York. Later on, meetings
with Isaac Stern had great impact on Mr. Berman’s creative development.
Together with his performances in Europe, Asia and both Americas, Pavel
Berman has participated in numerous Chamber Music Festivals around the
world and also has been an organizer and artistic director of the International
Chamber Music Festival, which took place in Rome and Milan. His most
important performances in 2000 were the China, USA, and Japan tours,
which included successful appearances in Dallas, San Diego, Peking and
Tokyo.
In December 1997, he became the Artistic Director of the Kaunas Chamber
Orchestra of Lithuania, therefore expanding his musical horizons to
conducting. Since then, the Orchestra has acquired a wide range of repertoire,
from baroque to contemporary music. While gaining popularity and respect
in their home country, the orchestra is already establishing an European
renommé by successful performances in Italy, Belgium, Croatia and Austria.
Lithuanian composer G. Kuprevicius arranged for Pavel Berman an accompaniment
to the 24 Caprices of N. Paganini, which was recorded in April 2001
with the Kaunas Chamber Orchestra.
During the 1990’s Pavel Berman resided in Florence, Italy and after
his marriage in December 2000, he moved to Madrid where he lives at
present.
Discography includes releases on Audiofon, Supraphon, Discover, Koch
International and Phoenix Classics.
