NUOVO QUARTETTO ITALIANO

Music by Antonín Dvořák, W. A. Mozart, Luigi Boccherini

FESTIVAL DI TORRECHIARA 2007

Heirs to the great tradition of Italian quartets, the musicians of the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano constitute the ideal artistic and instrumental continuation of the hugely renowned Quartetto Italiano. Since its debut the Quartet has gathered unanimous praise from critics all over the world who have recognised it as one of the best international chamber ensembles.
Even on the occasion of its first tour of the United States in 1985 the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano was chosen to represent Italy in the Italy on Stage Festival, appearing at the Lincoln Center in New York. The Quartet has links with the most important European musical institutions and had the honour of receiving an invitation from Sviatoslav Richter to the Moscow Conservatory Hall. From this prestigious opportunity emerged their artistic collaboration with the Borodin Quartet with whom the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano has played as an octet in the most important concert venues in Europe.
Since 1990 the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano has been invited to play during the major musical seasons of Europe, Brazil, United States, Japan and the Far East. Some particularly exceptional events were concerts at the United Nations in New York as well as at the Theatre Royal and Royal Palace of Madrid for a concert in honour of the Queen of Spain. The Quartet has also performed at the Sala Nervi in the Vatican and received an invitation from the Italian Consul General for an exclusive concert in Hong Kong.
In 2000, the year in which the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano celebrated its first 15 years, the group undertook a major tour of important German cities, leading them to perform in prestigious venues including the Musikhalle in Hamburg and the Konzerthaus in Berlin. In Strasbourg they played in the “France 3 Alsace” television auditorium for the opening of the NovecentoMusicale Festival, focusing on 20th century Italian music.
The Nuovo Quartetto Italiano is considered one of the most eclectic group on the Italian musical scene: indeed its repertory ranges from classical music to jazz and “marginal” music. Among the musicians the group has worked with for events, concerts and recordings are the pianists C. Guaitoli e B. Petrushansky ; the tenor V. La Scola; the violinists D. Nordio and M. Rizzi; viola player D. Rossi; cellist E. Dindo; clarinettists E. Daniels, De Peyer and P. Meyer.
Since the 90s the group has performed alongside the poet-musician Franco Battiato on recordings and for tours of Italy and other countries.
In 2001 an intense working relationship with José Carreras began, with dates all over Europe including a recital for the Josč Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation at the Teatro Real of Madrid, an event with the Honorary President, the Queen of Spain.
On the invitation of Artistic Director Claudio Abbado the members of the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano play in the Orchestra Mozart alongside such distinguished soloists as Giuliano Carmignola, Daniel Gaede, Danusha Waskiewicz, Mario Brunello, Alois Posch, Jacques Zoon, Andrea Oliva, Alessandro Carbonare, Alessio Allegrini, the Trio di Parma. The Nuovo Quartetto Italiano recordings have been praised in the most glowing terms by the specialist press, including: Choc de la Musique, Diapason d'Or, Stella d’Oro, Gran Prix du Disque, thanks to their interpretation of quartets by Verdi, Puccini, Martucci, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Rota, Respighi and Malipiero, on the Claves label. Numerous appearances on radio and television with live recordings and interviews in Spain, Germany, France, England and Switzerland have expressly linked the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano with the world’s most sophisticated musical models.
