FESTIVAL DI TORRECHIARA 2004
The
Leipzig Youth Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1985 by Wolfgang
Reckling and Iwan Iwanov. The young organisation achieved almost instant
and burgeoning success: the first important acknowledgment during its
first year was the 2nd Prize won at the International Youth Orchestra
Competition and this was followed by a period of intense activity which
took the orchestra to all the most important concert venues in Leipzig.
Having appeared at the Old City Hall and in the Congress Hall the orchestra
is now regularly asked to appear in the Great Hall and the Mendelssohn
Hall of the prestigious Gewandhaus.
The Leipzig Youth Symphony Orchestra is often invited to perform throughout
Germany and since 1993 it has undertaken tours in several European countries:
Greece, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria. A high point of its success was in
the summer of 2002 when it was the only foreign orchestra invited to
participate in the Festival of British Youth Orchestras in Edinburgh
and Glasgow, Scotland.
In 2003 the orchestra confirmed its position at the 4th Orchestra Competition
in Saxony by achieving 1st prize and earning enormous critical acclaim.
This success will allow the Leipzig Youth Symphony Orchestra to take
part in the 6th German Orchestra Competition in Osnabrück.
Thanks to the intense rehearsal period prior to the big concerts and
tours, the orchestra has seen the quality of its playing constantly
improve. Many musicians who are now undertaking regular professional
engagements with large German orchestras took their first steps in the
Leipzig Youth Symphony Orchestra. Future plans include closer collaboration
with the musicians of the Gewandhaus orchestra and the MDR Symphony
Orchestra who mentor the young musicians in their professional and artistic
development, providing support during rehearsals of the individual sections.
