Established in 1980 on the initiative of Maestro Armando Gatto,
the “Orchestra Filarmonia Veneta” has been the mainstay of
the operatic and symphonic seasons at the traditional theatres of
Treviso and Rovigo and at the Bassano del Grappa Opera Festival.
Under his guidance the sequence of highly reputable conductors includes
Arena, De Bernart, Campanella, Ephrikian, Fournillier, Gatti, Gatto
(artistic direction until 1984), Giovaninetti, Gracis, Maag, Pidň,
Renzetti (Principal Conductor 1996/1997), Severini (Principal Conductor
from 1984 to 1987), Soudant, Tchakarov and Peskň. Marko Letonja has
been the Principal Conductor since 2001.
There have been guest appearances from soloists of international repute,
among them the pianists Campanella, De Fusco, De Palma, Lonquich,
Tipo, Virsaladze, violinist Carmignola, cellists Brunello and Filippini
and mezzo-soprano Valentini Terrani.
The orchestra was the main facilitator of the Bottega – an
international workshop for young singers and musicians run by Peter
Maag – performing all of the concerts and operatic productions.
It has performed at the “Teatro dell’Opera Giocosa” (Savona), the
“Teatro Vittorio Emanuele” (Messina), at the theatres in Modena, Ravenna,
Pisa, Pavia, Como, Bolzano, Trento, Vercelli and Ferrara, at the concert
hall of the “Fondazioni Cini” (Venezia) and in the “Sala Verdi” of
the Conservatory in Milan as well as at the “Teatro Dal Verme” in
the same city. Recently it made guest appearances at the Vichy Opera
theatre and Massy’s theatre (France).
Recordings include Fauré’s Requiem conducted by Giuseppe Grazioli
for RAI 3 and music by Schumann and Beethoven under the baton of Patrick
Rounillier. There are also numerous recordings for the “Bongiovanni”
and “Rivo Alto” labels.
In 1999 the orchestra became an Autonomous Association called the
“Orchestra Filarmonia Veneta Gian Francesco Malipiero”, based
in Rovigo’s “Teatro Sociale” and its purpose is to spread music and
cultural activities throughout the Veneto Region.
