“RENATA
TEBALDI” TORRECHIARA FESTIVAL

Festival
di Torrechiara “Renata Tebaldi”

The splendid
Courtyard of Honour of the Castle is the setting of a Festival which
brings together classical music, jazz, dance and sounds linked to
tradition in various ways. The reason for this combination lies in
the conviction that Torrechiara Castle
(and the Courtyard of Honour with its perfect acoustic) isn’t just
a monument of the past but a space which has been lived in for five
centuries according to their contemporary customs by generations who,
one following another, form a perfect bridge between past and present.
Previous festivals have benefited from the presence of internationally
renowned artists, including the prestigious
Ensemble Berlin – Soloists of the Berlin Philharmonic,
the EUCO - European Union Chamber Orchestra, the Ensemble della
Scala and the Archi della Scala of Milan (String Ensemble) under the
direction of the Scala’s first violinist Francesco Manara, the
String Section of the Florentine Maggio Musicale
Orchestra, the Europa Galante
ensemble directed by Fabio Biondi,
the bass Michele Pertusi, violinist Bin
Huang, winner of the Genoa International «Paganini» Competition
The Swingle Singers, the accordionists
Richard Galliano and Antonello Salis, the Gospel singer Fontella Bass,
Enrico Pieranunzi, Augusto Enriquez
y su Mambo Jazz Band, David Krakauer’s Klezmer
Madness. Other memorable events were the productions of Gioacchino
Rossini’s opere buffe La Cambiale
di Matrimonio and Il Signor Bruschino
and the evenings dedicated to tango, flamenco and traditional music
from Naples, Piedmont, Capoverde, Greece, Ireland, Scotland.
The Festival is dedicated to the great soprano
Renata Tebaldi (1922-2004) who has been
the the exceptional patron of the event.
DEDICATED
TO... RENATA TEBALDI
“I
have God to thank for the gift of a particularly beautiful, natural
voice”. “It is through singing that I find this happiness which everyone
wishes for me”.
These are the words of Renata Tebaldi herself, with her balanced self-awareness
and humility so unusual in a world class star that it is the best
possible example to account for an unwavering level of success, undiminished
even after her retirement from the stage. A keyword for getting to
know Renata Tebaldi is love: love of singing, of music, of
characters she has played and above all, of the public. When she gave
concerts she said she felt a special joy because she always had the
impression she was singing not to the audience as a whole but to every
individual spectator present. And the audience realised this, they
felt this love and reciprocated.
In December 1995 at the Metropolitan in New York the English version
of her biography was launched and more than a thousand people lined
up to exchange a few words with her. On that occasion Renata signed
autographs for seven hours. Every year, On her birthday she sited
by the telephone and, regardless of tiredness, she answered the uninterrupted
stream of phone calls from well-wishers because all those who love
her had a right to hear her thank them personally. Few artists, maybe
no-one but she, have known how to transform the relationship with
the passionate admirer into a sincere and enduring reciprocated friendship.
Some may think we’ve neglected the singer by talking about the person.
They would be mistaken because the artist and the person are one and
the same, as beautiful as her voice.
How to reach Torrechiara
Torrechiara is
roughly 15 Km (10 miles) from Parma on the ex SS Massese towards Langhirano.
The castle can be seen from the road and is well signposted (there
is certainly no risk of getting lost once you reach Torrechiara!).
