TORRECHIARA FESTIVAL
2008
The Associazione Ensemble Strumentale Scaligero was formed
in 1989 by a group of like-minded musicians from the Teatro alla Scala
of Milan. The original core members, a quintet of strings and a wind
quintet, all permanent instructors of La Scala’s theatre orchestra
and the Scala Philharmonic, were joined by sax, piano, accordion and
percussion to create an extremely flexible ensemble. As a duo or a
dozen and in even larger formations they play both classical and contemporary
repertoire.
The
ensemble has made guest appearances at the most important Italian
and international musical institutions, including: Teatro alla Scala
and Teatro Manzoni in Milan, Teatro Bibiena in Mantua, Teatro Rendano
in Cosenza, Teatro Municipale in Piacenza, Stresa Festival, Ravenna
Festival 2000, MiTo 2007, Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin, Worlitz
Festival, Rhine Festival, Nimes Festival, Crans-Montana Festival,
Primavera Musicale di Lugano and Verdi Opera Theater of Michigan in
Detroit (USA).
Even in the year it was formed the Scala Instrumental Ensemble went
on a significant tour to the Lebanon. In 2002 they performed their
own season of concerts at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan and, with
support from the Teatro Lirico of Cagliari, they undertook a tour
of six concerts in Sardinia which they repeated the following year.
In September 2003 they received great acclaim during a long tour of
Japan where they were invited to perform again for the concert seasons
of 2005, 2007 and 2009.
In 2004 they were guests at the International Festival of Tirana/Scùtari,
of the Dankmall Festival in Lipsia and for the Bancarella Literary
Prize. In 2005, at the invitation of the Italian Foreign Ministry,
they held two concerts in Moscow at the launch of the “From Giotto
to Malevich” exhibition with such success that they were invited to
perform at the closing ceremony.
In January 2006 the group took part in the commemorative celebrations
for the tenth anniversary of the death of Maestro Gianandrea Gavazzeni
and had the honour of inaugurating the “V. Gassman” Theatre in Gallarate
(Milan Province), the Teatro Civico of Stradella (Pavia Province)
and the “G. Verdi” Theatre in Fiorenzuola d’Arda (Piacenza Province).
Also in 2006 they were guests of the Warsaw Philharmonic where they
enjoyed great success.
The ensemble performed two concerts at Sibiu (Rumania), European Capital
of Culture, in 2007 and has been invited to perform a concert in Bucharest.
In October of the same year they performed during the concert season
of the Verdi Opera Theatre of Michigan (USA) to enthusiastic critical
acclaim.
The Ensemble Strumentale Scaligero has made various recordings including
the fable The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde, which deserves a
mention for its originality,
with music by Silvio Amato, narrated by Gabriele Lavia and produced
by Ricordi/Feltrinelli,
Andrea Pecolo, Ernesto Schiavi: violin
Emanuele Rossi: viola - Marcello Sirotti:
cello
Omar Lonato: double bass
Maurizio Simeoli: piccolo - Roberto
Miele: horn
Corrado Giuffredi: clarinet
