Reinforcing the now well-established link between the
Festival and the surrounding region, the audience will once again
be offered an aperitif by local wine producers.
IRIO
DE PAULA
Brazilian Guitar The Heart of Brazil
TORRECHIARA FESTIVAL 2008
During
his extraordinary musical career, begun at the age of 6 when he performed
with his brothers on a Rio de Janeiro radio station, Irio De Paula
has played with the greatest musicians of his country: Paulo Moura,
Baden Powell, Dijalma Ferreira, Rauzinho, Eumir Deodato, Chico Buarque,
Astrud Gilberto and has recorded more than 50 CDs and LPs.
In the 70s, having completed a European tour with the singer Elza
Soares and opened an Ella Fitzgeral concert at the Pescara Jazz
Festival with his own trio, he decided to settle in Italy. Since
then he has taken part in world class Jazz festivals and performed
as a solo artist, in a trio and as a soloist with orchestra in the
most prestigious theatres and historical venues such as “Birdland”
in New York. He has worked with Gato Barbieri, Archie Shepp, Tal Farlow,
Toots Thielemans, Barnie Kessel, Bobby Durham, Jimmy Cobb and David
Sanchez.
It isn’t easy to define Irio De Paula’s music, just as it’s impossible
to draw up a precise programme for his concerts: he always follows
his own instincts and his own sensitivity in the choice of pieces
he presents, depending on the situation and on the rapport he establishes
with the audience but always following the intimate saudade
which guides how he expresses himself.
In this concert you’ll be able to hear tunes, rhythms and the atmosphere
of the genuine, immense Brazilian sound: choro, balanço,
samba, bossa-nova, the music of the north east, compositions
by Barroso, Jobim, De Moraes, Chico Buarque, Nazareth Pernambuco,
Baden Powell and many others as well as pieces by Irio De Paula himself
such as “Arcoiris”, “Nordest”, “Viagem”…….
It wasn’t by chance that the great deep soul of Brazilian poetry,
Vinicius De Moraes, called him “meu filho preto” my black son (and
jokingly, in return, De Paula called him “meu pai branco” my white
father, The great poet and musician perceived in the soul of Irio
De Paula the most authentic vibes of Brazil. The same ones that shimmer
in his music.
