COLUMBUS
YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA

Conductor: TODD A. STOLL
Big Band Classics - Homage to Giants of Jazz.
FESTIVAL DI TORRECHIARA 2005
Jazz orchestras
and composers like Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie,
Charles Mingus, constitute the best proof that jazz can now be considered
equal to any 20th century classical music and indeed as one of the most
lively and creative forms for the complexity of the orchestral arrangements
and the richness of the musical themes and emotions.
The Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra (CYJO) was founded in 1973
for the purpose of professionally preparing the most talented youngsters
in American secondary schools for the professional world of classical
jazz. Thirty years on it’s considered one of the best orchestras of
its type and a model to imitate. Since 1991 the CYJO has earned an excellent
reputation for the standard of both their concerts and their teaching,
indeed educators and pupils (22 altogether) play side by side at concerts.
Headlining numerous festivals and concerts the CYJO has enjoyed the
privilege of collaborating with great jazz artists including, but by
no means complete, Wynton Marsalis, Ron Carter, Lee Konitz, Michael
Brecker, Sarah Vaughan, Dionne Warwick, Gary Burton. Some individual
members have had the opportunity to play with great names like Buddy
Rich, Ray Charles and Woody Herman.
In 2002 the
CYJO was chosen as one of the best 15 finalists of the prestigious “Essentially
Ellington” competition for big bands which took place and the renowned
New York City’s Lincoln Center. The 1994 recording “Total Jazz, a Homage
to Giants” received the prestigious DownBeat Award.
The evening’s programme is a journey across 20th century Afro-American
music, showing its most cultivated and involving aspects, and includes
Big Band classics by Benny Carter, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dizzy
Gillespie and Charles Mingus.
